STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

Pictorial Input Chart

Key Points
  • Pictorials are penciled in and then presented in front of students for neurological imprinting.
  • It’s important to remember that the sketch in the middle anchors the concept and the categories around the sketch are from the standards
  • When presenting the pictorial make sure to stop and give meaningful heads together so that students can process the information
  • If doing a comparative pictorial input chart consider putting comparative (similar to, alike) and contrasting words (however, but, yet) in between the sketches so that students can use the language to generate oral or written sentences
  • Daily review of the pictorial is critical for retention. Don’t forget smart cards and pictures.
  • After the pictorial you can have students do an EL leveled question review or have students do a learning log.
