STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

PERSONAL STANDARDS AND LITERACY AWARDS

PERSONAL STANDARDS

This strategy supports classroom management.  The 3 personal standards are:
  1. SHOW RESPECT
  2. MAKE GOOD DECISIONS
  3. SOLVE PROBLEMS

Teacher gestures with the show of his/her fingers to connect the behavior shown with a personal standard

It is used:
  1. Daily while teacher is providing input
  2. To encourage positive behaviors
  3. When students are on the floor and teacher is providing input or soliciting information from students (big books, pictorials, narrative input, sentence patterning, process grid, editing, cooperative strip paragraph)
  4. When students are participating in a 10-2

 LITERACY AWARDS

This strategy is a behavioral management tool that supports/reinforces motivation to behave in a positive manner.

Paper or notebooks are used with authentic graphics and standards based information to reinforce concepts taught in class.

It is used:
  1. Daily while teacher is providing input
  2. Uses real pictures/photos, vocabulary and concepts related to the unit of study
  3. Teacher specifies what the student did to earn the award and connects the award to one of the 3 personal standards and hands the student a literacy award
  4. After teacher models, enlist the help of student “scouts” to pass awards. Scouts verbalize the reason for earning the awards while connecting to personal standards with the gesturing of the fingers
