STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

Sentence Patterning Chart (SPC) with Reading Game, Trading Game and Flip Chant Poetry

RATIONALE:
  • Models/teaches vocabulary, grammar, parts of speech, sentence structure, academic language
  • Builds rhythm and cadence
  • Lowers affective filter, promotes self-confidence
  • Guided Oral Practice
 
STEPS:
  1. Teacher draws four columns on white butcher paper if K-1, five columns 2nd grade and up.
  2. Write noun in second column, give definition of a noun, sketch pictures. Teacher chooses one plural noun or one proper noun.
  3. Add adjective in first column. Give students the academic term (adjective), paraphrase (describes), prompt (so). Draw arrow to noun column to show that adjective describes the noun.
  4. Students put heads together to brainstorm adjectives.
  5. Using “tell not yell”, teacher fills out adjective column in red as students call out adjectives. (K-2 add sketching)
  6. Read each column whole class before moving on to the next column.
  7. Fill out the rest of the columns in the same manner as above. Verb in green, using past or present tense only, adverb in orange (2nd grade and up) and prepositional phrase in blue.
  8. Teacher models in a metacognitive way, how to create a sentence/pattern with sticky notes.
  9. Teacher sings using parts of speech…adj, adj, noun…adj, adj, noun, adj, adj noun, verb, adverb, prep. phrase. (2nd and up) 
  10. K-1 is adj, adj, noun…adj, adj, noun, adj, adj adj noun, verb, prep. phrase
  11. Read across the grid, sing the pattern to the Farmer in the Dell.
  12. Students volunteer to create sentences/patterns; students move the sticky notes, point and lead class in singing.


        EXTENSIONS


        Reading Game
  1. Teacher transfers the words from SPC to word cards, staying color-coded.
  2. Teacher models how to use the word cards to create the same pattern as the SPC.
  3. Each team receives a controlled set of words from SPC.
  4. Students work in teams of 4 to create the pattern on their desks. Rules: no reading upside down, show cooperation.
  5. Students then practice singing out the pattern.
  6. Each team sings the pattern for the class.
  7. Teams earn points for helping each other and working together. “Are you right?” Is she/he right?” “Did you work together?”

        Trading Game
  1. Teacher collects all of the word cards and shuffles them.
  2. Cards are passed out to each team, but now the teams do not have the correct number of cards or parts of speech to create the sentence pattern
  3. Rules: no one reads upside down, show cooperation
  4. Each team trades with other teams to be able to create a proper sentence
  5. Teams earn bonus points for using academic language and respectful language while playing the trading game.
  6. Each team sings completed sentence
  7. Throughout the game, teacher asks…”Are you right? How do you know?”
  8. Word cards are collected and put in a baggie, may become an activity for future use, writing center, etc.

        Flip Chant
  1. Teacher models how to change present or past tense verbs to participle form (-ing) on a piece of paper, near verb column on SPC.
  2. Using SPC, whole class choral calls all verbs to participle form.
  3. Teacher models how to access the words from SPC and fills out a flip chant, which is the Here, There frame written up on sentence strips.
  4. Choral calling to fill in blanks and write chant.
  5. Sing chant together.
  6. Flip chant becomes a team task.
